AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Vince Carter will start tonight for the Orlando Magic, while one of the NBA’s longest consecutive games played streaks will come to an end.

Carter worked out prior to the game and deemed his sprained left ankle strong enough to play against the Detroit Pistons. Carter, Orlando’s key acquisition over the summer, stepped on Devin Harris’ foot midway through Friday’s win in New Jersey and felt a painful pop in his ankle. He didn’t return that night and sat out of Sunday’s 125-116 victory in Toronto.

``We’ll have him, but we don’t know how long he can go,’’ Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. ``But going through a walk-through is different than a game, so we’ll see.’’

Detroit forward Tayshaun Prince won’t play because of a lower back strain. It will end his streak of 496 consecutive games played and his NBA-best streak of 439 consecutive starts. Portland point guard Andre Miller is the NBA’s leader in consecutive games played at 532.

Prince won’t travel with the Pistons to Toronto on Wednesday or to Orlando on Friday.

Carter went through treatment on his ankle all day on Monday and even went through a light workout with the Magic’s assistant coaches. He was able to run drills in Tuesday morning’s shootaround, but those didn’t involve full-court work. Carter said a definitive decision won’t be made on his playing status for tonight’s 7:30 p.m. game against the Pistons until roughly 90 minutes before tipoff.

Carter went through an exhaustive workout Tuesday before the game and deemed himself ready to play.

``It’s better, but we’ll see,’’ Carter said somewhat Tuesday morning. ``I value the trainer’s opinions, but I’ll go through all of the (stuff) that they are going to put me through before the game and see what happens.’’
