Team New Orleans Hornets, comprised of some of my Hornets co-workers, family and friends, spent a beautiful morning in Baton Rouge last Saturday to participate in the St. Jude Give thanks. Walk to fight childhood cancer. I was inspired to participate in this event after a family I had followed very closely lost their daughter, Regan Boatner, to retinoblastoma (cancer of the eye) at the young age of 2 1/2 years old. As a mother of a 21 month old myself, this deeply affected me and this cause allowed me to redirect those feelings into something positive to help make a difference.
After taking on this cause, our head coach Monty Williams also shared the story of a fellow church family whose daughter, Amelia Tayloe, just began her battle with acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 19 months old. In addition to walking in remembrance of Regan, we were also proud to walk in support of little Amelia and her family as they begin their fight with cancer.
On Saturday, well over 2,000 participants with a similar passion gathered in beautiful BREC park to gear up for the 3 mile walk. Hugo and Honeybees Brenna and Giselle kept the children and adults alike entertained by taking photos and mingling with the crowd. The event was preceded by a presentation with community members affected directly by childhood cancer and their sharing of what this organization has allowed them to be thankful for.
Following the walk, participants enjoyed food and refreshments and the awards ceremony recognizing the efforts of some of the participants. To my surprise, I won the Individual with the Most Money Raised award at over $3,400! Through the total donations of over 70 very generous Hornets staff members, family, friends and others, we were able to achieve almost $3,900 total!
But, Team Anna James, led by mom Jenee Bourgeois, was by far the powerhouse of the event and captured the Highest Fundraising Team award with 160 walkers and over $21,000 in donations raised. Not only did they take the award at this particular walk, this team was the highest fundraising team in the entire country!
Their efforts are with good reason as they know firsthand what a wonderful cause this is – their daughter, Anna James, was diagnosed at 15 months old with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Through the amazing work of St. Jude, Anna James is now 2 years old and is expected to be cancer free and completely finished with her weekly chemotherapy treatments in September of 2012.
Through the participation and donations of so many, the Baton Rouge St. Jude Give thanks. Walk raised over $130K for lifesaving children’s cancer research and treatment. This is second in the entire country out of 79 other cities (the top city being NYC). We here in South Louisiana know how to support a cause! Congratulations to everyone involved!
